Highest Opportunity for Improvement

The STS Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement (MVRR) Composite Score measures surgical performance for isolated MVRR with or without concomitant tricuspid valve repair (TVr), surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF), or repair of atrial septal defect (ASD). To assess overall quality, the STS MVRR Composite Score comprises two domains consisting of six measures:

Domain 1 – Absence of Operative Mortality

Percentage of patients aged 18 years and older who were screened at least once within the last 24 months for tobacco use, unhealthy alcohol use, nonmedical prescription drug use, and illicit drug use AND who received an intervention for all positive screening results

Surgical volume for pediatric and congenital heart surgery: total programmatic volume and programmatic volume stratified by the 5 Society of Thoracic Surgeons - European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Congenital Heart Surgery Mortality Categories (STAT Mortality Categories), a multi-institutional validated complexity stratification tool

Percent of acute ischemic stroke patients receiving intravenous alteplase therapy during the hospital stay who have a time from hospital arrival to initiation of thrombolytic therapy (door-to-needle time) of 60 minutes or less

The percentage of adolescents 12 to 20 years of age with a primary care visit during the measurement year for whom tobacco use status was documented and received help with quitting if identified as a tobacco user.

The percentage of patients 18 years and older with a serious mental illness or alcohol or other drug dependence who received a screening for tobacco use and follow-up for those identified as a current tobacco user. Two rates are reported.

Rate 1: The percentage of patients 18 years and older with a diagnosis of serious mental illness who received a screening for tobacco use and follow-up for those identified as a current tobacco user.

The percentage of children ages 2 through 15 years old with sickle cell anemia (Hemoglobin SS) who received at least one transcranial Doppler (TCD) screening within a year.

Admissions for a principal diagnosis of diabetes without mention of short-term (ketoacidosis, hyperosmolarity, or coma) or long-term (renal, eye, neurological, circulatory, or other unspecified) complications per 100,000 population, ages 18 years and older. Excludes obstetric admissions and transfers from other institutions.

[NOTE: The software provides the rate per population. However, common practice reports the measure as per 100,000 population. The user must multiply the rate obtained from the software by 100,000 to report admissions per 100,000 population.]

Accidental punctures or lacerations (secondary diagnosis) per 1,000 discharges for patients ages 18 years and older who have undergone an abdominopelvic procedure; in which a second abdominopelvic procedure follows one or more days after an index abdominopelvic procedure. Excludes cases with accidental puncture or laceration as a principal diagnosis, cases with accidental puncture or laceration as a secondary diagnosis that is present on admission, and obstetric cases.

The proportion (XX out of 1,000) of individuals without cancer receiving prescriptions for opioids with a daily dosage greater than 120mg morphine equivalent dose (MED) for 90 consecutive days or longer.
